Belinda’s Adventure World Famil to Sri Lanka
Ur Senior Travel Adviser Belinda recently explored the wonders of Sri Lanka with Adventure World — and she’s brought back some incredible highlights to share. From ancient cities to coastal luxury, here’s her day-by-day journey:
Day 1 – Arrival into Colombo
We landed in Colombo late at night and were met by our wonderful tour leader, Richard. He made things easy from the get-go — helping us with SIM cards and currency at the airport before we jumped into our transfer.
Our first stay was at The Wallawwa, a peaceful colonial-style retreat just 20 minutes from the airport. It felt like stepping into another world — five acres of lush gardens, quiet corners, and a beautifully restored heritage property. My room had a four-poster bed and a gorgeous garden view… just what I needed after the long journey!
Day 2 – Ancient Cities & Arriving in Sigiriya
Day two took us deep into Sri Lanka’s rich history. We visited Anuradhapura, one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and stood before the Sri Maha Bodhi tree — over 2,200 years old and believed to be where Buddha attained enlightenment. Watching locals pray and offer gifts was a deeply moving moment.
We also stopped at Ruwanwelisaya, a massive white dagoba that draws thousands of pilgrims every day. The energy there was humbling — a spiritual experience I won’t forget.
That evening, we arrived at Water Garden Sigiriya, an absolute standout hotel. My villa looked out over tranquil wetlands with Sigiriya Rock in the distance, and the sounds of birdlife all around. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of ancient wonders.
Day 3 – Village Adventures, Lily Hats & Local Flavours
This day was one of my favourites — so hands-on and authentic.
We began with a visit to a rural village, travelling by tractor and canoe through the rice paddies. At the farmer’s hut, we were treated to homemade roti bread with coconut and lime sambal, all made from ingredients grown right there. It was simple but absolutely full of flavour.
Our guide even made us hats from lily pads on the way across the lake — a fun little moment that had us all laughing!
Later, we joined a cooking class and made dahl and savoury biscuits — a great cultural touchpoint that clients will love.
That night we checked into Heritance Kandalama, an eco-luxury resort set into the rock overlooking the lake. The infinity pool, the views, and the serenity made this place a real highlight.
Day 4 – Balloon Rides, Rock Fortresses & Poolside Views
This day was an absolute dream. We started with a sunrise hot air balloon ride — floating over rice paddies, misty forests, and tiny villages waking up for the day. When we landed, dozens of locals (and their dogs!) came to greet us. It was such a joyful, unexpected moment — and yes, there was champagne to celebrate!
Next, we tackled the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress. It’s a steep climb, especially in the heat, but totally worth it. The view from the top was breathtaking — lush jungle as far as the eye could see.
That afternoon was all about relaxing. I swam in the infinity pool at Heritance Kandalama, overlooking the lake and taking in the stillness. Dinner that night was at their à la carte restaurant — fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented.
Day 5 – Temples, Gems & Tea Country
We started our journey south with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temples, which were absolutely stunning. Inside the caves, we saw ancient Buddha statues and intricate ceiling paintings that have survived centuries.
In Kandy, we visited the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, which holds one of Buddha’s teeth — it’s a deeply spiritual site, and the energy there was calm and reverent. We also had a stroll around the lake and popped into a gem museum to admire some of Sri Lanka’s famous sapphires.
That evening we made our way up into the cool, misty hills of Nuwara Eliya and checked into the Heritance Tea Factory — a heritage hotel set high above the tea plantations. The views were beautiful, the air was crisp, and the charm of the building made it feel like a step back in time.
Day 6 – Scenic Train Rides & Safari Dreams
This was a real pinch-me day. We boarded a train from Nanu Oya to Ella, winding through tea plantations, misty mountains, and tiny hillside villages. It was cool and peaceful up in the hills — such a refreshing change from the tropical heat.
For lunch, we stopped at Uga Chena Huts, a luxury hideaway right on the edge of Yala National Park, with individual villas and private plunge pools. The seafood lunch was one of the best meals of the trip.
That afternoon we headed out on a jeep safari and spotted elephants (including a baby!), crocodiles, deer, water buffalo, a python, and heaps of birdlife. It was wild and beautiful.
Overnight was at Doubletree by Hilton Weerawila — modern, peaceful, and beautifully set up for relaxing after a big day.
Day 7 – Exploring Galle’s Colonial Charm
We travelled down to Galle, a coastal town where Dutch colonial architecture meets tropical Sri Lankan vibes. We walked around the old Galle Fort, with ocean views, winding laneways, and even a glimpse of the cricket ground.
That night we stayed at the beautiful Le Grand Hotel, right on the oceanfront. My room had a view of the water and the fort — such a dreamy spot.
Dinner was at The Merchant Galle 1710, a stunning restaurant in a restored colonial building. The interiors were full of coastal charm, and the food was absolutely delicious — fresh seafood and amazing local flavours.
Day 8 – Sunrises, Shopping & Turtle Rehab
I woke early to watch the sunrise from my balcony — a peaceful, golden moment before the town came to life. I walked into town and explored Galle’s boutique shops, filled with local crafts, art, and Ayurvedic products.
In the afternoon, we headed to Kosgoda and stayed at the Sheraton Turtle Beach Resort. I took a long walk along the beach where I spotted cows lounging in the sand and friendly dogs roaming the shore — a very Sri Lankan beach experience!
We visited a local turtle hospital, where injured and rescued turtles are cared for. It was a touching experience and one I’ll definitely be recommending to animal lovers.
That evening we had time for one last dip in the pool before heading back to Colombo airport for our flight home.
