New Guinea Odyssey with Ponant

Papua New Guinea with Ponant Cruies

PONANT invites you to embark on board Le Soléal for an 17-day tropical expedition cruise to discover the sublime natural landscapes of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Day 1: Embarkation in Darwin

As soon as we boarded the ship, we were greeted by the captain, which set the tone for what was going to be a memorable journey. The check-in process was seamless—no long waits, just friendly, efficient staff who were always ready to help. A highlight of my day was being invited to visit the bridge for an informative tour, which was a real privilege. I also had the chance to visit the Blue Eye Bar, a unique feature of Ponant ships, situated 3.5 metres below the waterline. Its architecture mimics the inside of a whale, with the windows acting as its “eyes” and the structure resembling “bones.” Later that evening, the bar came to life with live music—a perfect way to end the day.

Day 2: At Sea

We spent the day at sea, enjoying the ship’s many amenities, including the spa, sunbathing, and attending some of the onboard talks by the naturalists and experts. A perfect time to relax before our first port of call.

Day 3: Kei Islands, Maluku Islands

Kei Island was like stepping into a postcard—white sand and crystal-clear water. We were welcomed with a beautiful ceremony by the local villagers, including children singing, which was truly heartwarming. My highlight for the day was deep-water snorkelling. The marine life was breathtaking—I counted 20 different species of fish and was mesmerised by the vibrant coral and even spotted a huge blue starfish.

Day 4 – 5: Banda Neira, Maluku Islands Kitikiti Waterfalls, West Papua

We visited the stunning Kitikiti Waterfalls today, which allowed us to swim behind the falls, surrounded by the turquoise mix of freshwater and saltwater. It was a refreshing experience, and Ponant ensured it was extra special with a well-organised stop for lunch. Now, we’re heading north, ready to cross the equator for the next part of our adventure.

DAY 6 – AT SEA

Day 7 – 8 : Cenderawasih Bay

Whale Sharks What an unforgettable day! Swimming with whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay was an awe-inspiring experience. These gentle giants swam gracefully around us. It was fascinating to see the traditional fishing vessels known as Bagans in the bay, which attract marine life, including the whale sharks. This was a day I’ll never forget.

DAY 9 AT SEA

DAY 10 – 11 Jayapura, Papua – Kopar, Papa New Guinea

Today we visited the remote village of Kopar, accessible only by boat. The village welcomed us with a cultural ceremony and dance, including the famous “Dragon Dance.” The people here have very little, but their kindness, generosity, and happiness were incredibly touching.

DAY 12 – 13 Madang – Tami Islands

We were treated to multiple cultural performances showcasing the traditions of the coastal, midland, and highland communities. After lunch, we sailed to Tab Island, where we snorkelled and swam. Ponant even set up a beach bar for us, serving champagne and beer—a perfect way to unwind! Tami Islands was another breathtaking stop. The crystal-clear blue lagoon, filled with abundant marine life, was a snorkeller’s paradise. We were also able to interact with local artisans, famous for their beautifully decorated bowls.

Day 14 – 15 Tufi – Alotau

Papua New Guinea’s Fiords Today, we ventured into the “Scandinavia of the tropics” at Tufi. We travelled by handmade outrigger canoes through the rainforest, meeting with the local chief who demonstrated how they make sago. It was a fascinating and enriching experience in this remote paradise.
