Cruising Europe's Grand Waterways with Viking Mimir
By Janelle Paton
Magical. Relaxing. Inspiring. Delicious. Friendly.
These were just a few of the words shared among the wonderful group of friends I made during my 15-day Viking Grand European River Cruise. After experiencing this incredible journey myself, I completely understand why so many guests return to Viking time and time again.
From 24 April to 8 May 2026, I sailed aboard Viking Mimir, travelling from Amsterdam to Budapest through four fascinating countries, picturesque villages and some of Europe’s most breathtaking scenery.
A Warm Viking Welcome
From the moment I stepped onboard, I felt genuinely welcomed. Although my stateroom wasn’t available until later in the afternoon, the crew quickly checked me in, looked after my luggage and invited me to enjoy lunch in the restaurant while I waited.
That first meal perfectly set the tone for the journey ahead. Fresh salads, hearty mains, homemade soup, warm bread, and complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks made for a relaxed introduction to life onboard.
My Stateroom

I stayed in a Category E stateroom on the Main Deck, one of Viking’s entry-level cabin categories.
While the cabin features a half-height picture window (sometimes affectionately called a “duck view” cabin), I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious and comfortable it felt. There was excellent storage, a queen bed that converts to twin beds, luxurious linens, a well-appointed bathroom with heated floors and anti-fog mirrors, daily replenished Freyja toiletries, complimentary bottled water, a small refrigerator, USB charging ports and twice-daily housekeeping.
Like every Viking cabin, it was thoughtfully designed with everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
Life Onboard
One of the things I loved most about Viking is the relaxed atmosphere.
There are no casinos, no children onboard and no formal dress codes. Instead, the focus is on enjoying the destinations, meeting fellow travellers and simply slowing down.
Most guests were retirees from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, creating a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. With open seating at meals, it’s easy to meet new people. By the fourth evening, many guests, including us, had naturally formed friendship groups that continued dining together for the rest of the cruise.
Food Worth Talking About

The dining experience was consistently excellent.
Breakfast offered everything from fresh fruit, pastries and cereals to made-to-order eggs, waffles and pancakes. And yes, if you felt like starting the day with a mimosa, Champagne was available too.
Lunch combined familiar favourites with regional specialties inspired by each destination. I quickly developed a habit of enjoying the freshly baked bread alongside the daily homemade soup.
Dinner featured beautifully prepared classics such as Angus rib eye, Norwegian salmon and chicken breast, alongside locally inspired dishes that reflected the region we were sailing through.
Every meal was accompanied by attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere that made dining one of the highlights of each day.
The People Who Make Viking Special
While the destinations are spectacular, it’s the crew who truly make the experience unforgettable.
Every staff member was warm, professional and genuinely cared about ensuring guests had the best possible holiday. Although gratuities are already included when booking through Australia, many guests chose to personally thank our favourite waiters and cabin steward for their exceptional service.
Special mention also goes to our outstanding Cruise Director, Carl, whose organisation, knowledge and enthusiasm ensured every shore excursion ran seamlessly.
Exploring Europe One Port at a Time
One of my favourite parts of river cruising was waking each morning in a brand-new destination.
Each port included a complimentary guided excursion, usually a walking tour led by knowledgeable local guides who brought every city to life through fascinating stories and local history. Viking also offers slower-paced walking options, making excursions accessible for guests with varying mobility levels.
For those wanting even more, there are also optional premium excursions available throughout the journey.
The Grand European Itinerary
This incredible itinerary visits some of Europe’s most iconic destinations, including:
- Amsterdam and Kinderdijk in the Netherlands
- Cologne, Koblenz, Miltenberg, Würzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau in Germany
- Melk, Krems and Vienna in Austria
- Budapest, Hungary
Each destination offered its own unique charm, history and unforgettable experiences.
Unforgettable Moments
There were countless highlights throughout the journey, but nothing quite compared to cruising through the Middle Rhine.
Watching centuries-old castles appear around almost every bend while relaxing on deck was truly magical. It felt like sailing through the pages of a storybook.
Equally memorable were the friendships we made along the way. Sharing meals, excursions and conversations with fellow travellers became just as rewarding as the destinations themselves.
Final Thoughts
Viking’s Grand European River Cruise exceeded every expectation.
The exceptional service, beautifully designed ships, delicious cuisine, fascinating destinations and relaxed onboard atmosphere combine to create an experience that’s both enriching and incredibly enjoyable.
If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing Europe without constantly unpacking and repacking, a Viking river cruise offers one of the most comfortable and immersive ways to experience the continent.
After sailing this remarkable journey myself, I can absolutely see why so many guests return to Viking again and again.
If you’re considering a European river cruise, we’d love to help you find the perfect itinerary and share our firsthand experience to help you plan your own unforgettable adventure.
